Emma: Fox & Fabels

Hello!
I am an illustrator based out of Minneapolis, MN. My work can be described as whimsical and cozy, often including elements of nature and animals. I am inspired by children's literature, folklore and fantasy.

Let us know more about your business name - how did you come up with it?

My business name "Fox & Fables" is inspired after what inspires me and my work! I love the playful nature of fox and other woodland creatures. I also like to think of my illustrations as "visual storytelling" with many whimsical details.

What is your signature style / item? How did it become so?

My signature style is very illustrative watercolor & gouache paintings. In college, I worked a lot with india inks in my illustrations and eventually started exploring other water-based medium types.

What makes your business unique to the industry?

I think what makes my business unique is that it really started organically through word-of-mouth. Friends and family were my biggest supporters and it just grew from there! I started an Instagram account and was able to connect with many new clients through that platform.

What's been your biggest roadblock when it comes to business and how have you been able to overcome?

My biggest roadblock (and still is) is time. Fox & Fables is still a side-gig, and am hopeful that soon it can become my full-time job! There are many things that I wish I had the time to do, but there are just not enough hours in the day. I've worked really hard to establish boundaries and a schedule so that I'm not straining myself too much.

How has your business had to adapt amidst the Covid-19 Pandemic? What are you doing to navigate the situation?

My spring and summer markets were cancelled, which was a bummer. I sell work in local shops and those sales were put on pause. However, online shopping grew considerably during quarantine and I had quite a few commissions and Etsy sales to keep me busy! I am lucky that it didn't affect my business too much.

What is your favorite part of what you do?

I love having the freedom to create whatever is inspiring me! My favorite part is sitting down to paint or craft an idea that comes into my head and watching it come to life.

What is your *must do* local activity?

I think a "must do" is to hit up a few of the local breweries. There are so many! Particularly in my neighborhood, Northeast Minneapolis.
