Wool and Spice

Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do:

Holly: Wool and Spice

Holly: Wool and Spice

I am a self taught fiber artist and I make one of a kind purses and pouches using upcycled wool, leather, and fun textiles. I only use my original patterns and designs and I make all my items in my Scottsdale Arizona studio.

Let us know more about your business name - how did you come up with it?

When I first started my business I only used recycled wool, hence the first part of my business name "Wool". But I had a feeling that I would eventually branch out into other fibers, hence the "Spice" which includes everything else I work with. As I've evolved, the "Spice" is also all the extra things I do to my product and I often tell customers that I add spice to my work.

What is your signature style / item? How did it become so?

My signature style is my appliquéd poppy flowers. These have evolved over many years into a stylized circular flower made from upcycled wool and lots of thread. They are always so popular that I place them on all of my products.

What makes your business unique to the industry?

A lot of artists use discarded sweaters to make new usable items like mittens, shawls, and other clothing. I feel that I'm unique in using the upcycled wool in my purses and pouches.

What's been your biggest roadblock when it comes to business and how have you been able to overcome?

My biggest roadblock is that I've had to overcome my lack of computer and social media skills. I've come a long way in learning these vital skills but it's been hard. I have a creative brain, not a tech brain, so I've had to retrain my thinking in that area.

How has your business had to adapt amidst the Covid-19 Pandemic? What are you doing to navigate the situation?

I sell my product mostly at art shows and local markets, but with the Covid-19 Pandemic those got shut down. I decided to work on my online presence and put my energy into my Etsy shop. A lot of my existing customers found me online which was wonderful.

What is your favorite part of what you do?

My favorite part is creating. I love to sew and make my products.

What is your *must do* local activity?

I am an avid bike rider and hiker. I live very close to Papago Park and I exercise in the park four and five times a week. It is a beautiful place to explore.
