Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do:

Lu + Elle is a handbag line that is inspired by world travel and the relaxed Southern California lifestyle.

Let us know more about your business name - how did you come up with it?

I named Lu + Elle after my two cats, Lucy and Elwood. They are not impressed :)

What is your signature style / item? How did it become so?

Lu + Elle started because I had a surplus of fabrics that I had collected over time, mostly through my travels and vintage shopping. One day I decided to make a simple pouch from the fabric (thanks Youtube for teaching me how to sew in a zipper) and I started selling!! I then decided one of the key values in the business would be incorporating my love for travel with making unique, functional, everyday bags. It's about interesting textiles mixed with an effortless silhouette that can be carried everyday.

What makes your business unique to the industry?

We source fabric from different parts of the world so you really get a sense of each culture within the fabric. Embroidered skirts from the Hmong tribe in Thailand or Mudcloth from Africa, they all have special characteristics that make them all so interesting.

What's been your biggest roadblock when it comes to business and how have you been able to overcome?

I think one of the biggest roadblocks that I'm currently experiencing, is moving Lu + Elle into a new production model in order for scalability. I struggled with leaving behind small mentality in order to set it up for growth in the future. I think it came down to partnering with the right people, trusting the growth and process and understanding that I can do/and give so much more with more success... and not to be afraid or ashamed of that!

How has your business had to adapt amidst the Covid- 19 Pandemic? What are you doing to navigate the situation?

It definitely was hard at first, especially seeing all of our retailers close up shop. Thankfully, we have a strong community who continued to support us. I personally took the time to hire a business coach, take some new classes and really dive deep into the business to set long-term goals and a path on how to get there.

What is your favorite part of what you do?

My favorite part(s) would have to be interacting with my community, customers, fellow makers, business owners etc. I love the connection and building of a relationship. I also REALLY love to travel to source the fabrics!

What is your *must do* local activity?

We live in North Hollywood and some of our local favorite spots would be, Pitfire Pizza ( the bacon and brussel sprout pizza is the die for!!) Tea Pop, Fat Dog for the charcuterie board and chop salad, White Heat yoga and Stout for a huge selection of delicious beers!
