Tell us a little bit about who you are and what you do:

Lauren: Queen City Revolt

Lauren: Queen City Revolt

Hello! My name is Lauren and I started QCR in 2011. It was a side hustle to my side huslte (I was also a full time graphic designer and a bartender).  I realized at my design job that my favorite projects were the ones where I was able to do apparel graphics. So I made it my goal to do just that, full time, on my own. It started VERY small, with manual screen printing press in my basement; and I literally used the sun to burn my screens!

Let us know more about your business name - how did you come up with it?

The "queen city" part comes from my love of this amazing city, Cincinnati, that I was born and raised in. The "revolt" part was my way of saying that my designs and style were a little more unique, and maybe a little less mainstream.

What is your signature style / item? How did it become so?

My most popular items are my tshirts with bold graphics. Simple, clean design, and usually only a one color design, which helps me keep the prices low for my customers!

What makes your business unique to the industry?

There are A LOT of tshirt companies out there, and a lot of great designers. But this is a one woman show, and I do all of the design work myself (along with alllll the other things required of running a business!). I think my style is evident in my work, and with me being the only one here, it gives my work a consistency and a quality that customers can depend on.

What's been your biggest roadblock when it comes to business and how have you been able to overcome?

My biggest roadblock is just finding the time to work! In addition to running this business, I am also a stay at home mama to three children under age 4. They are beautiful little miracle wild animals that NEVER STOP! I work during every window of opportunity I can manage, and after they go to bed. It is by far my biggest challenge to just balance work responsibilities while also trying to raise kind, respectful, tiny humans.

How has your business had to adapt amidst the Covid-19 Pandemic? What are you doing to navigate the situation?

I have definitely had to step up my social media, which is not something I am great at. I prefer the in-person sales I have at markets, but that hasn't been as much of an option. I have also not done as many sports-related designs, and stuck to more "Ohio" and "Cincinnati" things. Customers don't really buy sports stuff when they can't physically go to the games! Plus, Ohioans are a proud crowd, so I am always excited to get a new Ohio, Cincinnati or Midwest design going!

What is your favorite part of what you do?

My favorite part of what I do is having the flexibility to raise my kids while doing a job I love. It is also the most challenging part, but I am grateful for the opportunity to be home with them!

What is your *must do* local activity?

My favorite "must do" activity is absolutely going to local markets. They have looked a bit different this year with masks and social distancing, but they really try to keep people safe, and it is so worth wearing a mask to go! There are so many local, talented people in this city.  I love shopping the markets as much as I love participating in them! My absolute favorite is The Westside Market, followed closely by the Hamilton Flea, the City Flea, Art on Vine, and the Oakley Fancy Flea. If you have never been, go! You will be amazed at the incredible work your neighbors are doing!
